Tom Woolley
Freelance Illustrator
With over 14 years’ experience working as a freelance illustrator, Tom Woolley has worked on a variety of projects; from spot art for children’s textbooks to large-scale murals for Sherwood Forest. In his talk, Tom will discuss his journey so far and share insights into building a successful career as a freelancer.
Tom will highlight early commissions for clients such as McCain chips that gave him the confidence to persevere, to working on jobs for UNESCO and Northumberland National Park. He will discuss building a portfolio that attracts dream clients and the pros and cons of specialising in a certain niche. Tom will also talk openly about the ups and downs of anxiety as a freelance illustrator, and techniques he’s practised to soften the lows.

Freelance Illustrator
Tom Woolley is a freelance illustrator based in Birmingham. Tom specialises in illustrated maps and has created maps for clients including UNESCO, Hilton Hotels, the Wildlife Trust and MUJI. Tom has been working as an independent illustrator since 2012 and has also worked on children’s books, branding and editorial projects.
Originally from Derbyshire, Tom studied Electronic Imaging and Media Communication at the University of Bradford. After graduation, he worked at the National Science and Media Museum before becoming a full-time freelance illustrator.
