Sarah Bagshaw

John Hall
Multidisciplinary Designer and Artist
Exploring where fine art practice meets commercial textile design, Sarah Bagshaw and John Hall will delve into their experiences working as designer makers with a focus on surface pattern and textiles.
Creative Director of About Pattern studio John Hall will share his experience of the textile print design sector with a particular focus on fashion. Sarah Bagshaw has extensive experience in education and will talk about how this has aligned with a number of exciting industry collaborations in relation to her surface pattern and fine art practice.
A not so straight path, both John and Sarah have a shared interest in abstract art and design language, urban decay and pattern. They have collaborated previously on fashion based print collections and will also reveal the complexities of running a design business alongside family commitments, teaching jobs, and an inherent need to just make visual work!

Sarah Bagshaw
Artist, Designer & Educator
Sarah is an artist/designer/educator based in Birmingham, UK. She is most well known for her bold, graphic pattern designs that are applied to a range of products – from clothing, to watch faces to packaging. Sarah worked for many years designing patterns for gift boxes at Lush Handmade Cosmetics, with other clients including Anthropologie, 3M and Haagen Dazs.
In recent years, Sarah has returned to her fine art practice using paint, printmaking and collage methods. Her current body of work involves using a range of techniques to add colour and pattern to used cardboard packaging materials, destroying them and then reassembling into compositions. Whatever her medium, Sarah’s process is about play, experimentation and fun!

Multidisciplinary Designer and Artist
John Hall is a multidisciplinary designer and artist.
He runs the international textile print design studio “About Pattern”, providing surface pattern designs to a wide range of fashion and lifestyle brands. Clients include Uniqlo, Philip Lim, Foot locker and H&M – www.aboutpattern.com
As a fine art practitioner John’s work explores the joy of paint as a medium in its own right. His paintings have been exhibited in a wide range of venues, and are an investigation of pattern, abstract shapes and forms inspired by motifs found throughout the city. Paint is assembled by layering torn and shredded acrylic paint skins onto more traditionally painted surfaces.
