Ink & nibs – Antique solutions to modern problems
Alice Cao
Illustrator
When Alice graduated in Illustration in 2019, the choice of committing to a traditional medium like dip pen and ink in an industry that was increasingly dominated by digital work, seemed like a very risky choice. She discusses how she navigated the illustration world in last five years since graduation, and how this big inky risk has paid dividends, becoming an unlikely asset and shield against unforeseen problems.

Hailing from Vietnam, Alice Cao is a BA Illustration graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and holds an MA in Visual Communication from Birmingham City University. She enjoys the fantastical, the historical, and everything in-between. Currently based in the charming little medieval town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire with the looming threat of drowning in houseplants (‘tis a most serious predicament), Alice specialises in traditional hand-drawn illustration. Dip pens are her weapons and ink is her poison. She would take a stab at most things, though what comes out tends to take a turn for the unsettling and strange.
