Shirlyn Low
Batik Artist and Architec
Shirlyn is a Batik Artist and Architect. Based in the UK but born and raised in Malaysia, she embraced the rich heritage of batik art, learning from skilled artisans and craftsmen across Malaysia and Indonesia. She creates hand-drawn batik, aka “batik tulis”, by mixing modern styles and designs with traditional dyeing and wax-resist techniques.
With batik becoming a declining craft, her mission is to make batik art more accessible and to bring the story about the rich cultural heritage behind this ancient craft with 2000 years of history to new audiences. To this end, she regularly hosts workshops and exhibits her batik art in galleries and fairs across the country. Aside from creating her own batik art, she works on commissions and live batik demonstrations for clients such as Great Western Arcade and John Lewis. She hopes to discover new experiences and share her passion for batik craft.
