Typography Lab: Typographic Interventions

  • Pop-up

Birmingham & Midland Institute

Opening Times

10am – 5pm, Saturday 9th June

What is a typographic intervention? What if it’s not what it says on the tin? Can typography alter your experiences, or nudge you to change your behaviour?

You are invited to take part in typographic research in the mobile Type Tasting laboratory, which will have a series of experiments running throughout the year and comes to the Graphics Hub (BMI) for one day as part of the Birmingham Design Festival. The experiments are designed to gather data, and also to encourage you to think differently about typefaces and perception as you take part in them – so drop by to spend a few minutes talking type with Type Tasting founder Sarah Hyndman.

Birmingham & Midland Institute (BMI) is a Victorian Grade II listed building, nestled behind Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in the city centre. The BMI has been at the heart of Birmingham’s cultural life for over 150 years. It was originally founded by Act of Parliament in 1854 for the ‘Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art amongst all Classes of Persons resident in Birmingham and Midland Counties’. Charles Dickens was one of its early Presidents.

A note on accessibility: There is some accessibility but this is unfortunately limited in some areas due to the age of the building. Disabled visitors should contact BMI before attending an event so they can discuss in more detail how to make their visit as accessible as possible. Hearing loops are available for a small fee.
