On Friday night head over to The Giant Screen at Millenium Point and get lost in alternate universes and lovingly crafted animation. MinaLima (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) Erica Dorn (Isle of Dogs), Mike McGee (Framestore) and Gavin Strange (Aardman) will be talking design for film & TV and how they help deliver authenticity to the worlds they create.
Creating tiny Worlds: Graphic design for Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs – Erica Dorn
As lead graphic designer in the art department of Isle of Dogs, I will go “behind the scenes” of the two-year production, taking you through the process of designing typography for props, sets, and supertitles, from demystifying the role of the graphic designer for film, to breaking down the process of research and design. I will describe what a typical day on set is like, what it means to collaborate with director Wes Anderson, favourite graphics, most difficult moments and specific insights on the world of stop-motion animation and miniatures compared to a live-action film.
Graft, Craft & being Daft – Gavin Strange
By Day, Gavin is a Director and Designer for the UK’s beloved creative studio Aardman Animations. By night he goes under the alias of JamFactory, indulging in all manner of passion projects, from filmmaking to illustration, toy design to photography.
Making the work is the easy part, finding the time, however, is the difficult bit. In his talks and his book, Gavin shares his stories and methods behind getting the most out of those 24 pesky hours, conveyed via the medium of bright colours and animated GIFs.
The Evolving Art of Storytelling – Mike McGee
Framestore and its Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Mike McGee, have been immersed in VFX for over 30 years. An Oscar-winning Global team of experienced artists, technologists, programmers and producers, Framestore has created some of the most unforgettable and iconic moments in Film, Television and Advertising.
From projects like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Gravity’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Mike’s session will illustrate the art of VFX and how new platforms are playing a key role in shaping the future of story-telling and entertainment.
Telling Stories through Design – MinaLima
Mira and Eduardo, the graphic designers of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, and creators of Harry Potter’s Acceptance Letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Marauders Map and The Daily Prophet newspapers amongst other iconic artefacts, will explain how they created some of the most-loved graphic props from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film series.
They will reveal insights into the world of graphic design for film as well as share anecdotes from their work in publishing including designing a series of illustrated classic fairytales.
