In a creative landscape increasingly shaped by automation, frictionless workflows and digital perfection, Imperfect Worlds explores the growing cultural pull of craft, tactility and human-made storytelling.

Chris Randall, Creative Director of Second Home Studios, takes audiences inside the realities of running a contemporary multi-discipline animation studio where stop-motion, VFX, puppetry, CG and mixed-media techniques collide. From miniature sets and physical materials to motion control, compositing and experimental pipelines, the talk looks at howimperfection itself hasn’t just been a creative tool, but a necessity for world building.

Drawing on projects including the BAFTA-nominated preschool series Tweedy & Fluff, alongside commercial and experimental work developed at the Birmingham-based studio, Chris will unpack why audiences will always connect with things where the artist’s hand is visibly on show.

Expect behind-the-scenes process, production experiments, unfinished tests, creative failures, and a candid look at the messy realities behind hand crafted image-making.

If yours is a mind that loves patterns, structures and puzzles as well as playing with colour, this is the workshop for you! This kind of small-scale weaving sits somewhere between coding and colour theory.

Over the course of two hours, you’ll learn the basics of fabric construction, trying out a few weave structures using paper strips. You’ll then choose one structure to translate into a woven piece using yarn on wood/mountboard. Through play with colour and weave structure, you’ll create your very own mini artwork to take home.
Through learning how woven fabric is constructed, you’ll develop the understanding and techniques to mend your own textiles.

At Quartermasters we are all makers and have a lot of scrap that cannot be used for our practices, but of course being makers we can not throw anything away.
We need the room in our studios, we need to change! Using embroidery hoops, acrylic off cuts, leather, yarns, papers and more  join us to create your own scrap hoop.

All materials will be provided, as we paint, stick, stitch and draw our way through 90 minutes of spectacular design thinking and adapting as we change our scrap into works of art.

We’ll be storytelling about our own changes, listening to yours and creating a space where we can think about the changes we would like to see. Having a hoop in your hands is a great way to listen, who knows someone’s story of change may be the answer you have been looking for.

What to bring

• We will have lots of scrap materials but if you have some ephemera you would like to include please bring it along.
• We will be stitching but no previous experience is necessary
• Your change story, don’t worry it could be how you changed a tyre or went gluten free!

What you will leave with

• A small scrap hoop full of change inspiration
• Confidence to create change from even the smallest scrap

Print once ruled mass communication, but in a digital-first world it’s being considered in a new light – something that takes people away from the noise online and fully immerses them in the creative vision of the publisher. Designers can create work directly for their audience, not an algorithm, and try out ideas that wouldn’t work on the screen.

Drawing on work with Newspaper Club and Glasgow Print Fair, we’ll explore how print opens up a space for experimentation, collaboration, and community, where small publishers and independent artists are reshaping what publishing and art can be today
